SOLA (Week 1): “Solus Christus”

Jason Mayhall, Lead Pastor – Hebrews 1:1-4, 4:14-16, 9:11-15, 10:12-14

Pastor Jason Mayhall begins a new sermon series at Redemption Bible Church entitled “Sola,” which is the Latin word for “alone” (or “only”). Starting with “In Christ alone,” Pastor Jason teaches how only through Christ can we find salvation . This is embodied by the Latin phrase Solus Christus, the first of five central theological principles that describe what the Christian church is centered on. It is these truths that we need to focus on and not focus on things other than Jesus to validate our faith. We learn about the story of Martin Luther and the belief that salvation is not earned by doing good deeds but is only received as a free gift from God. This view was revolutionary at the time, as the church was in the business of selling indulgences as a way to offset sin, and Martin Luther was branded a heretic for his teaching. Ultimately his view spread beyond his native Germany and remains a central characteristic of doctrine to this day.
